How The Shadow Came to Be

How The Shadow Came to Be

The idea for The Shadow came from my own experiences with sleep paralysis.

For years, I've experienced episodes where I wake up unable to move while seeing things that feel terrifyingly real. If you've ever experienced sleep paralysis, you know how strange that space between sleeping and waking can be. Your brain is awake enough to know where you are, but your body hasn't quite caught up yet, and sometimes your mind fills that space with things you definitely did not invite in.

For me, those experiences became the starting point for a story.

I've seen Hat Man during sleep paralysis alongside other things that appear in those moments, but I've never found him threatening. The others are often disturbing or outright horrifying. Hat Man has always felt different. He's more like a calm, familiar figure among everything else happening in the room. Seeing him has never created that same sense of fear.

That contrast stuck with me.

What if, among all the terrifying things someone encountered during sleep paralysis, there was one presence they had seen so many times that they had become familiar? What if the shadow standing quietly in the corner of the room wasn't the thing that they needed to be afraid of?

And, because apparently my brain cannot leave a creepy concept alone without turning it into a romance, the next question was obvious...

What if she fell in love with him?
